Happiness can be defined as total number of desires fulfilled over the total number of desires. This can be viewed in many ways.
Ideally, if you have no DESIRES, you are the most happiest and satisfied person in life. Our great sages have followed this route to attain Nirvana.
However, practically it is difficult to have no desires. Now that we can't live without desires, the higher and larger the desires, the longer it takes to fulfill and longer it takes for us to become a happy person. Follow a simple rule, divide even the larger desires into smaller desires. Every time, the smaller milestone is achieved, it will give a satisfaction and happiness.
The most practical way for me was not to expect nothing in return for any deed and hence chances of desire not getting fulfilled dramatically reduces.
